What makes your heart sing, your spirit soar? Sometimes we spend a great deal of time reviewing our faults and very little time recognizing what makes our heart soar. Today is the day to look at what makes your heart sing!
Over twenty years ago I took a class and one of the assignments was to schedule and do a DSFY day. DSFY stands for Do Something For Yourself. In the busy-ness of our days we often forget that what nourishes us matters. We think that we don’t have time for us because we have so much to do. My challenge for you is to take time to think about what makes your heart sing, pick one and then do it!
I thought about whether I should use the word challenge or use a “softer” word, but stuck with challenge and here’s why. It often is a challenge to let yourself not only think about what you like, but then to act on it. Some people tell me that it’s selfish to do what you want to do. And I say “bravo” – it’s time to do something for you, to nourish your inner self. When we let ourselves get depleted it’s kind of like trying to warm a house with a pilot light. We need to generate inner fuel to be able to live full out.
Here are some things that make my heart soar, in no particular order – talking with friends; making a new recipe that is “lick the plate” good; having my family gather to laugh, talk, eat, and simply hang out; reading a book that makes me laugh out loud; walking in nature; creating new ideas and exploring how to share them with others; coaching people to achieve exactly what they want; and going to concerts with my husband and friends.
I encourage you to make a list of what makes your heart sing. Write it down so you have a go-to list when you are so busy that you can’t even think about what you love to do. Give yourself a DSFY day or at least an hour. What makes your heart sing?
