Age Isn’t Even a Number

Last night we went to see Peter Gabriel and I had many thoughts running through my head during the show. He is 62, his voice was spot on and he had high energy throughout the show.  I was thinking about how in the past people might have thought that “rockers” wouldn’t be relevant into their 60’s and 70’s. And, that simply is not the case. This year we have seen Santana, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Peter Gabriel and will see Neil Young in a few weeks. They all are as powerful as they were when we first saw them 35 years ago! And, the people sitting around us, seeing these bands for the first time. were as enthusiastic about their performances as we were!

The real point of this observation is that no matter what your age you are not too old or too young to live your life full out, doing what you love. Maybe you are nearing retirement age and feel that you are just getting started. Maybe you are a teen and have a great idea, but are afraid that people might laugh. What would bring you great joy? How could you bring some of it into your life? Today! You don’t have to be a rock star playing before a large audience, but you might love to play the guitar and sing in the privacy of your own home. So, do it! It isn’t an all or nothing proposition. How can you begin to have a life filled with vitality – doing the things that really matter to you?

Sometimes we think we are too young to do something big and then you read about a 13 year old who has started a not for profit and is making big changes in the world, Or you read about a 95 year old who has just retired from his job because he wants to spend a little more time golfing! Your age isn’t a factor unless you let it be. It’s only a story we tell ourselves to help keep our internal fears in check.

Whether you are 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, or 85+, the time is now to claim what you love. The number of years you have been on this planet doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that you remember what excites you, what brings passion into your life, what “floats your boat”, and do it! What do you love to do that you haven’t done for awhile? What would you like to do that you haven’t tried yet? What story have you told yourself to keep you from taking that first step? Change your story and start one small step at a time. The key is to take that first step and remember that you are up to something big!
