I have been thinking about one of the differences between children and adults – curiosity. I think children have an innate curiosity about things. They like to take things apart, put them back together, taste them, pinch them, look at them from different angles, and sometimes put them in their ears or noses to see what happens. As we get older we often forget to be curious. We are faced with school or a job and have requirements and expectations to meet, which leave little room for curiosity.
I have begun to be more curious about things to see what happens. Last May my husband went to Germany for work and I went with him. I had the days to explore the Bavarian Alps while he was in meetings at work – I know, a tough job, but somebody has to do it 🙂
One day I went to Oberstdorf because someone told me about the spectacular views of the Alps from the ski lifts. I arrived and found that the ski lift wasn’t going to open until the next day. So, I decided I would find a parking lot and explore. I then proceeded to follow a family that looked like they were going to go on a hike. The trail led up the mountains through some very beautiful scenery. I had a wonderful day and was happy that I allowed myself to be curious about the area. I didn’t search around for a map or give up and go back home. I became the adventurer and had a glorious day – the picture above is one of the views I came upon.
I have given myself the permission to be more curious and less serious about life. I am now apt to seek out a new restaurant that I have read about and enjoy the experience, tasting unexplored cuisines, rather than simply reading about it. I also ask more questions when I don’t know the answer rather than acting like I know what someone is talking about.
When we are curious about things we open up many doors and opportunities. What could you be curious about? What new things could you explore? The beauty of curiosity is that you don’t have to know the answers, there is no right or wrong. It’s all about exploring and trying things out. Enjoy the journey!
