We often look back in our life and judge the choices that we have made as right or wrong. They are neither. When you come to a place of new choice you look back and see how you have gotten here. You cannot get from point A to point B in a straight line – life simply doesn’t work that way.For instance, if I want to get from my house in Downers Grove to the city of Chicago, there is no possible way for me to go in a straight line. As I pull out of my garage I am faced with the first choice – do I turn right or left. If I continue in a straight line I will be in my neighbors yard and then smack dab through their fence into the next neighbors house! Choosing to turn right or left doesn’t mean that I made a “bad” decision, it only means that I am at a point of decision about where I want to go. And, I will have many of those choices as I drive east toward the city.
The same thing is true when we make decisions in our lives. You look at the information you have at hand and make a choice about the current decision. You live with it for a while and then make another decision. When you actively make a choice you are empowered because you are choosing rather than reacting or acting as if you don’t have any choice.
The act of choosing gives you the power of movement. You will have many, many choices in your life and when you are stuck it often is because you feel like you don’t have any choices. Look at all of your options and choose the one that fits in that moment, live with it and then choose again. Sometimes I forget this in my life and agonize over decisions, wanting to choose the perfect one, forgetting that I get to choose again, later. Here’s to a year of choices!
