One of the frescoes at Abbazia Monte Oliveto Maggiore. I love the young woman on the right side. She could be from modern times, with her short skirt slit up to her thigh, her tall boots and her expression of “really”. Many of the frescoes at this abbey were quite humorous.
The view from one of the back roads we took from Buonconvento to Siena. It took us awhile to get to Siena because we stopped so many times to take pictures.
One of the 14 towers in San Gimignano. This one captured me with the man standing atop the tower keeping watch over the square.
A Roman ruin outside of Volterra. It was built between 1 BC and 20 AD. It was an adventure finding this site. It was just outside the walled city, down some winding streets. I had to stop twice to ask for directions, which in itself was interesting – a lot of pointing, smiling, and gesturing, but we found it!
This is from a church several miles outside of Volterra. The mountains look very different here than in the more southern area where we were staying. Notice the sharp angles on either side of the trees.
Maremma, which is on the coast and at the very southern part of Tuscany. Again, look at the different landscape than what you typically see in pictures of Tuscany. It was great seeing so many different sights within a 2 hour circle of Buonconvento.
The Duomo in Siena. Another beautiful day and such interesting angles.
This is the view from a little Osteria (osterias serve local wines and food). We found it in the Chianti region down a dirt road and it was one of our favorite adventures on the trip!
Toasting with a local chianti – the picture above was taken from here.
The view from Podere Cunina, where we stayed. It was our last night and what a spectacular view! Look at that moon!!!
One of my favorite views – I love the different colors of green and the different textures. This is taken from the same spot, but turning a few feet to the right, at the same time as the picture above.
The sunset our final night in Tuscany. This was also taken at the same time as the two pictures before this, a few more feet to the right. We were so fortunate to be able to sit and see all of this beauty simply by turning our heads. John and I sat out here every night with our glass of wine to watch the sunset. And, this our final night, was by far the most spectacular!
