Unlike Humans, Water Always Follows the Path of Least Resistance

Water Least ResistanceI was sitting by a creek last week, watching the water. Once again I was struck by how water always follows the path of least resistance. When it encounters a block it simply slips around another way or settles in to the stillness of being where it is. It doesn’t try to force itself to go any particular way, it simply follows the path of least resistance.

As humans, I wonder how often we would move forward more gracefully if we followed that path of least resistance rather than trying to make things happen in a specific way. Interestingly, for humans, the path of most resistance is often taking no action at all. Our fears stop us in our tracks and instead of doing something and seeing where it takes us, we get stalled out in the place of doing nothing.

Like with water, when you meet an obstacle you can look for other options. So often, we get moving in a specific direction and keep going, no matter what. What if an obstacle is an opportunity to look anew at the direction in which you are going and a time to make a different decision? What if it is time to make a decision based on a path that would not be filled with struggle?

Where could you look for a different path, a different solution, a different option, a different choice – one that aligns with you and that you could traverse with ease? In what areas are you ready to follow the path of least resistance?
